How do superheroes fall in love? Is it because of what they have in common: being a superhero, fighting the same enemy, having the same friends? Enter Aquaman and Mera. Who are they? They are superheroes based in the sea. They live in Atlantis, an underwater kingdom. They are warriors fighting the same enemy. They have super powers such as enhanced strength and speed. He is also able to telepathically communicate with marine life, which he can summon from great distances.

These two have had their share of highs and lows. They have been enemies, partners, and lovers. Aquaman has even saved Mera from enemy hands. It only makes sense that they have fallen in love. Together, as Arthur Curry and Mera, they join their family and close friends to partner up in life. Inspiration came from DC Comics and, in particular, the DC character, Aquaman. Many DC elements related to Aquaman and his alter ego Arthur Curry were incorporated throughout the design. The entire design revolved around the colors orange and green since Aquaman´s costume in the DC comic books is orange and green. Also, referencing the DC comic books was key to have the wedding of Aquaman and Mera stay true to the comic books they originated from. One such comic book detail was making it known that the Justice League was present at the wedding because Aquaman is part of this superhero team.

The sea was also an inspiration for this inspired wedding because Atlantis is inside the sea and it is where Aquaman resides. Being outside of the sea also encompasses Arthur´s character since he is half-man, has loved ones that are humans, and has lived in the surface world in the past. The wedding took place in the surface world on a beach. In addition, many design elements were chosen with the sea in mind.

The tablescape elements were chosen to give off an elegant look that related to the sea, a place close to Aquaman’s and Mera’s hearts. Both the sweetheart table and guest table were beautiful treasure chests. The linens to semi cover the chests were specialty linens. The glass charger plates of the Atlantis guest table were in the shape of shells. The white and clear dinnerware added character to the design. On top of the dinnerware was a satin green napkin and on top of this napkin was an orange dahlia plus a sea glass place card. The Atlantis guest table had sea glass place cards of the alter egos of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Catwoman. On their place settings there was an identifier that made their superhero character known like Clark Kent’s glasses. The gold flatware and crystal glassware added extra elegance. Table settings were covered in spiky driftwood like the coral of the sea and succulents like sea plants. Eucalyptus and bay leaves added green texture and movement. Orange accents came from dahlias. The Atlantis guest table was surrounded by a sand circle and it’s where giant aloe plants where placed to reflect the mighty kingdom of the sea.

Cristina from Hermosa Weddings and Events created the framed guest table name, Atlantis. She bought a gold frame that resembled a shell. She also bought some specialty green and orange paper plus gold letters. She made it happen with scissors and glue. Cristina created the signature drinks display. She bought a gold trimmed chalkboard, gold foiled letters, and Etsy comic book exclamations. The green and orange signature drinks were named after comic book exclamations of Bam! and Boom! keeping in line with the DC comic books.

Cristina bought Justice League figurines because Aquaman is part of the Justice League. It was nice to have a figurine of him in his original costume from the DC comic books. These figurines were also used to indicate that the entire Justice League was present at the wedding. Cristina bought vintage Aquaman stamps to place on the invitation envelope. It was a nice touch for the custom made invitation suite.

Lastly, because there is an actual DC comic book where Aquaman and Mera get married, Cristina framed the cover. It was the icing on the cake for this elegant affair. Because Aquaman’s/Arthur Curry’s personality is laid back, he did not require a suit. A suit for him is his superhero costume. Instead, an orange vest with a green tie was a perfect fit because his costume encompasses these colors in the DC comic books. Besides his vest and tie, the rest of his attire needed to be subtle. So, linen beige pants with a patterned and beige buttoned up shirt were a part of his attire as well. He wore socks with some green on them and his orange shoes tied everything together. He didn’t wear his green gloves but they did make a small appearance.

Mera’s attire consisted of a dress, floral headpiece, and feet glam. She wore a long turquoise dress that had a sequin gold top. This dress was chosen because the gold top looked like fish scales plus turquoise for the color of ocean water. Her headpiece was custom made for her because she wears a gold tiara in the DC comic books. It looked amazing on her long red hair! Gold feet glam to match was a nice touch.

In making the florals for Aquaman and Mera, the colors, textures, and style were reflective of their characters and the ocean from which they come from. Dill and eucalyptus were used as a sea kelp forest canopy for the couple. It started off grayish green near the bottom and changes to yellow as the kelp reached the light. Underneath the canopy was driftwood, sea grass, aloe, and succulents to bring the beach in. Several arrangements were also placed around the driftwood for more color.

Mera’s crown was made on a base of copper which spiked up above her head and behind her ears to reflect her power, strength, and energy like a sea warrior. Sea shells, sea grass, and kangaroo paws to show the wild texture of the ocean she rules. Safflower both in the green and blooming stage added both texture and a splash of orange. Mera’s bouquet included green and orange to stay true to the colors that she and Aquaman wear. Hydrangeas, gray blue succulents, and juniper pods are aqua in color for the aquamarine of the ocean. Spiky toothed grevillea, crocosmia, and kangaroo paws were used for wild texture reflective of the sea as well as for the yellow and green colors. Sea grass added more texture and movement of the beach. Dahlias, roses and callas gave the punches of orange. Craspedia also gave a hint of yellow. The entire bouquet gave the emotion of a wildly textural ocean bouquet.

Aquaman’s boutonnière was simple textures of sword-toothed like leaves, kangaroo paws, and a hint of orange from gomphrena and safflower flowers, and green succulent as he is Aquaman! Overall lots of textures and materials were brought in to reflect the wild ocean, flowers orange and yellow, and green greenery to reflect the colors of their characters, and the style was textural like the sea from where the characters come from.

The focus of the cake was to highlight the deep ocean because Atlantis is deep in the ocean. Hand painted blues and greens represented the water. Sugar dusted candy glass looked like real sea glass. Being green in color was perfect and orange shells were another nice addition. When thinking about the colors that represent Aquaman, usually one thinks of green and orange. Finally, the gold accents tied in well and they were used to represent Aquaman’s gold trident.

From Cristina of Hermosa Weddings and Events –

I am a big fan of DC and this is my third DC inspired styled wedding shoot that I have planned and designed. My favorite DC superhero is Superman so my first one involved Superman and Wonder Woman. My second one involved Batman and Catwoman. Aquaman and Mera was naturally third since the movie premiered on December 21st and because Aquaman is a member of the Justice League just like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman.

I like to think that I am the biggest Superman fan out there! As a child, my brothers had their comic book collections and, of course, Superman was part of their collection. I loved reading the Superman comics. I have also attended San Diego Comic Con International many times and guess who I have cosplayed as?

Since I am a girl, I have cosplayed as Supergirl but I have also cosplayed as a female version of Clark Kent. At Comic Con, I have waited in line for many hours just to be able to see Henry Cavill speak about his role as Superman. I have been to two Comic Con panels where he was there and both times I was fascinated and thrilled to actually be sitting in the same room as him. He is a talented actor and he is the perfect Superman! I also cosplay as Supergirl every chance I get for Halloween. I naturally love all the DC characters.

Yes, I’m a nerd!
