From the Photographer

Dora and Patrick got engaged in Ireland, but decided to do their engagement pictures closer to home! They live just a few blocks away from the Wharf, so it was the perfect spot to document their love story.

Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?

Dora: We first met on the dating app Hinge. I was first interested in Patrick because he had photos of an amazing Halloween costume he made based on one of my favorite tv shows, Rick and Morty. I was impressed by his creativity and sense of humor alike.Patrick: Dora wrote on her profile that she was a master of karate and friendship for everyone (a quote from Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia) so I knew I could tell really bad jokes and she would still want to go out a second time. My roommate called them third date jokes, but with Dora they were first date jokes. Our first date was brunch at a spot in Columbia Heights called The Coupe. Patrick kept extending the date by.

What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. What makes your relationship unique?

Our relationship is built on shared values. We are able to support each other fully because we understand the importance of ambition and family in each others lives. We love to travel together and experience new things. It is also evident when we travel that we really balance each other out. One persons weakness is the other persons strength. And in that way we are always supporting and teaching each other. Our love is special because it is only between the two of us (and we can go to IKEA without getting into a fight!). But our love is also the same love everyone hopes to find. It’s what connects all people. A desire for companionship, for person that loves you despite of your misgivings and bad jokes. We know everybody doesn’t find this but we feel so lucky to have found each other.

How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship?

Dora: Patrick’s father way living in Nicaragua when he fell very ill. Patrick flew down immediately to help him but unfortunately he passed away within a few days. When I received Patrick’s phone call, there was no doubt in my mind that I needed to be with him. Within the hour I bought a plane ticket, emailed work that I wouldn’t be in for a few days, and flew to Nicaragua. There was no hesitation for me to drop everything and fly to another country for Patrick. It made me realize just how much I cared about him, that I would do anything to support and care for him.

Patrick: It was the same time for me that I realized Dora was the one. When my father passed away, the one person I wanted next to me was Dora. I needed to stay in Nicaragua for about a week to get all the affairs in order to travel back to the US. Spending that week in Managua with Dora was very special. Doing small things together like going to the grocery store, playing backgammon at the hotel, and going to places I had once been to with my father – all those moments helped me get through a very difficult week.

Give us all the details about the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise? What was the planning process?

Dora wanted to take a quick trip to Ireland to see her mother for her birthday. I had been trying to make a proposal plan for the better half of a month, but this trip would be the perfect chance! We flew to Ireland on Valentines Day, however, we were both a bit tired and jet lagged that day so I decided to hold off. The next day we spent time with Dora’s family in town doing some shopping. Though Dora said she didn’t want anything for Valentines Day, she was a bit sore at me that there wasn’t a gift the day before. She was a bit of a cranky camper the whole day. When we reached home it was evening and I suggested we go for a walk. There is a small bridge down the road from her mother’s house that is enclosed by trees and has a stream running through. It was the perfect spot to propose. Dora was very reluctant to go for a walk and protested against the idea. Once I did coax her out of the house we barely made it half way to the bridge before Dora wanted to turn around. Knowing we weren’t going to make it to the bridge, we stopped in the middle of the road. I said, “Well, I do have a Valentines day present, but I want you to wear it for the rest of your life”. And the rest is history…

We’re all about the bling… Tell us all about that ring!

The ring is a unique one of a kind piece made by a jeweler in New York. It features a rose cut oval diamond with two smaller diamonds on wither side. It is very delicate and beautiful. It has a vintage air to it but is also very classic. We picked it our together.

Are you excited to start planning your wedding day? Do you have any ideas in mind yet?

We started planning a year before our date. We are so glad we gave ourselves this much time because we didn’t realize how much went into planning a wedding! We also needed a whole month to absorb the sticker shock and come to terms how much this was going to cost us! We are very excited to plan the wedding. We are putting thought into everything and we really want our wedding to represent our values and commitments to the life we want to live. For example, our wedding will be plastic free. All our disposable items will be 100% biodegradable products.
