Aryan and I both grew up in Castro Valley, California, a suburb of the San Francisco Bay Area. Being a small town, we met in middle school through mutual friends, but we were never in classes together and we were never more than acquaintances. In high school, we finally had one class together in our senior year and he sat behind me and we became class buddies. Something to understand about Aryan was that he was always joking around and playing pranks, which is how he flirted with me. The university I was going to was one he was interested in as well, but he wanted to transfer after a couple of years. We kept in touch and soon went on our first date in February 2008. We’ve been at each others’ sides ever since!
In November 2017, my cousin Kaitlyn was studying abroad in London, and Aryan’s brother Mayhan was also studying in Dublin, Ireland, so it was a trip we had to take. The four of us were in London and took the train to Paris for the day. We started the day very early and hopped into a taxi to head to the Eiffel Tower. We walked around for a bit and Aryan wanted to take the perfect selfie with the Tower in the background, so we followed him around as he took selfies. Finally, he found a spot far from the crowds where the whole Tower could be seen in the frame. He handed his phone to his brother to take a picture of us, so there I was posing next to him. In the corner of my eye, I saw his body lower and I thought he was tying his shoe, and I told him to get up for the picture. Instead, he pulled out a ring and proposed! Going back to him always joking, I have to admit my first words to him were “Are you serious?” After 10 years of dating, I wasn’t sure it was going to happen, but little did I know, he had been planning this for months! Of course, I said yes, once I realized he was being genuine. We spent the rest of the day walking around Paris, eating crepes and pastries, and sharing the news with everyone at home.
