From the Photographer

Tansy and Tom first met at a rock climbing gym, and they got engaged while on a rock climbing trip! So it made sense that they wanted to do their engagement photos at one of their favorite spots to climb – Seneca Rocks.

Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?

We were running next to each other on the treadmills at the rock climbing gym. We developed a friendship over time due to our shared love of adventure and the outdoors. We continue to share similar hobbies and spend as much of our time climbing, hiking, cycling, and basically anything else that keeps us active and outdoors.

What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. What makes your relationship unique?

We share a lot of the same hobbies, we met rock climbing and it has been a special activity for us over the years, growing and getting more comfortable with greater heights and new skills/ techniques. I (Tom) proposed on the top of a 80ft cliff after we both climbed to the top.

How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship?

Pretty quickly we both realized that a very long term relationship was being built. We were both hesitant to jump into anything too quickly, even after all of our friends and family had decided for us that we should hurry up and get married, we delayed until we were sure. After I (Tom) returned from my deployment to Afghanistan for the Army, and our relationship was as strong as ever, we were sure that we were in it for the long haul.

Give us all the details about the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise? What was the planning process?

Tansy and I had long conversations discussing whether we were ready, and decided to start ring shopping. After we had designed a custom ring and ordered it, I knew that any chance to surprise her would be out the window once the ring was delivered. Tansy originally wanted an opal for her engagement ring, but it’s fragility made that impractical and we went with Moissanite instead. I decided that an opal ‘stand-in’ ring would be a great idea, purchased a beautiful second ring, and surprised her on a climbing trip to West Virginia. Our friends that were on the trip with us were in on it with me, and agreed to go to a specific cliff that Tansy and I had climbed before. We hiked in to the top of the cliff and our friends hung out while Tansy and I dropped to the base of the cliff and began the 2 pitch climb to the top. I led the climb, and when I got to the top, a friend handed off the ring to me while Tansy was preparing the last part of her climb. She came up below me and I secured her to the anchors, dropped myself down a few feet so that I could “kneel” below her, then tapped her on the shoulder a few times to get her attention. She was wondering why all of our friends were aiming their cameras at her after what was to her an otherwise unremarkable climb. She said yes!

We’re all about the bling… Tell us all about that ring!

As an interesting and adventurous couple, Tansy set out to look for interesting rings. After getting nowhere with the shops around where they lived, she took a friend’s advice and looked at what the creators on Etsy had to offer. She was rewarded with two-toned unique rings by a group called Camellia Jewelers. She inquired as to whether they could make something custom that would incorporate the double figure eight climbing knot used in rock climbing safety. Raman, from Camellia delivered not only the engagement ring, but matching wedding bands as well. The ring features the double figure eight as well as roses to signify their love of the outdoors.

Are you excited to start planning your wedding day? Do you have any ideas in mind yet?

Its already planned! Yes we’re excited to celebrate our commitment to one another with friends and family.
