From the Photographer

Valerie is from Seattle, WA and Dennis is from South Jersey… Valerie found me on Instagram from a giveaway contest and asked me to photograph their engagement and wedding. Valerie was very new to the east coast and neither of them had been to Longwood Gardens before, so we explored and took some photos!

Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two first meet?

We met in 2016 in Seattle, Washington. Dennis was playing a show that I had attended. We both ended up at the dive bar across the street from the venue after the show. He came up to me and introduced himself. He bought my drinks and we played darts until the bar closed. I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard with anyone I just met. It was an amazing night.

What makes your relationship special? Tell us some things that you both value in your time together. What makes your relationship unique?

We started our relationship long distance and Dennis travels for weeks to months on playing music. Our time is very limited and for that reason we value every moment we get together. We love doing everything with each other, from road trips across the country to vegging out on pizza and watching the Office. Being best friends is really what makes our relationship so special.

How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship?

It is really hard to pin point any specific moments. Honestly, it was really just a feeling that neither of us had experienced with anyone else in the past. I hate to be cliche’; however, when you know… you know. And we just knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.

Give us all the details about the proposal. How and where did it happen? Was it a surprise? What was the planning process?

Dennis flew out to Portland, OR to move me to Philadelphia. I picked him up at the arrivals and got out of the car to greet him. He walked around to put his luggage in the car and asked me if someone had hit my car. I quickly walked over to see what he was talking about and to my surprise he was on the sidewalk, down on one knee. I had initially wondered why he was on the ground. I stared at him for a second confused at what was happening and then he asked me to marry him. I was speechless. I hugged and kissed him and forgot to say “yes”. A bunch of people were watching, one man even slow-clapped. Dennis got up and asked me, “So, that was a yes… right?”

We’re all about the bling… Tell us all about that ring!

The ring is a beautiful rose gold custom made piece. He did good!

Are you excited to start planning your wedding day? Do you have any ideas in mind yet?

We got married at our residence in Philadelphia, PA. We threw a block party reception with music, food trucks and donuts. It was the most perfect day!
