Mario and I met back in 2011 through a close friend of his, who also happens to be my brother-in-law. For a few years, we just remained friends. We would occasionally hang out with my sister and brother-in-law, along with all their friends, but there wasn’t much going on between us. At the time, I had a crazy work schedule and he would sometimes stay up late to go out for dinner or the movies with me. Sometimes we wouldn’t talk to each other for a while, or I played hard to get. We weren’t in bad terms; we were just going through a very weird phase. It was like an on and off again friendship. Lol
Cliché, but I guess you can say it was like love at first sight or it was meant to be, we just didn’t know it. It wasn’t until 2015 that we decided to actually give it a try, in hopes of it becoming something official. On October 11, 2015, Mario asked me to be his girlfriend and I couldn’t have made a better decision.
Mario, with the help of his parents, proposed to me on April 7, 2018, at a restaurant in Tijuana, B.C. About a week prior to the proposal, he mentioned his parents wanting to out for dinner because they needed to talk to us. I jokingly asked, “Are they going to start charging us rent for staying at the ranch?” and his response was, “I don’t know, they just want to talk to us.” Saturday came, and we started to get ready. Mario usually rushes me as I’m getting ready, but not that day.
Once we got to the restaurant, Mario’s parents went to say hi to their friend, the chef, as Mario and I were walking over the table. While going over the menu, the waiter came over to give us recommendations and to show us their meat and wine variety. We were being given the special treatment and I never got suspicious because I thought the chef and his team was being courteous. So, Mario decided to go with some lobster and ordered a bottle of cabernet, and I chose steak and a soft drink.
It all went downhill from there…
The waiter brought out a hot lava rock and placed it right in the center of our table. The table was so small, and you can feel the heat hit your face. Once they bring the food out, they finish off cooking it by placing it on the rock. Mario started sweating like crazy, but I blamed it on the lava rock and the wine. Then, Mario started struggling with his lobster; it was so bad, the waiter had to help him out. Then, I noticed the waiters playing with the AC and the lighting; I guess they were nervous themselves and wanted to make it perfect. I jokingly asked Mario, “Are you going to propose?” He obviously said no. Hahaha Anyone that knows Mario knows he’s always pranking our friends by faking proposals.
The fun begins here!
Mario’s mom got up to “go to the restroom.” A couple of minutes after, Mario needed to go too. As Mario’s dad and I were waiting, his mom went to the car to grab the flower bouquet and ring to hand it over to the chef. Meanwhile, the chef was preparing our dessert and Mario was just panicking in the restroom. Next thing you know, Mario walks up behind me and places the dessert plate in front of me. It said (in Spanish), “Will you marry me?” and I said, “Are you serious?” Even though I was holding a bouquet of flowers and I was staring right at the ring, it took me a while to realize that it wasn’t a joke this time. Mario had to snap me out of it and of course, I said “YES!!” It was all a beautiful disaster.
