Matthew and I met in the hotel lobby of The Dream Hotel in New York while traveling on business. We were both living in LA and were attending an event that his company was producing and my company at the time was sponsoring. We ended up staying up all night talking until 3am and forgot to exchange numbers, but fate had us run into one another the next evening at a bar. A few months later, we moved in together and have been inseparable ever since!
Matthew and I were attending an event he was producing in Barcelona and I decided to come last minute. He wasn’t incredibly adamant about me joining this particular trip so I lost all suspicion that he might propose. After the event, we decided to fly to the small island of Menorca. We stayed at a beautiful boutique hotel that had a rooftop overlooking the entire island and while sipping wine over sunset, I made a joke that he should have proposed in this spot. Little did I know that he had been traveling for the last 7 days with the ring in his pocket waiting for the right moment to propose. The next day, we visited a stunning ancient labyrinth/maze with two friends. Matthew talked me into taking a photo together (very rare for him!) and lifted me onto an 8ft wall that was less than 1ft wide. When I turned around, he was down on one knee with a spontaneous proposal and luckily neither of us fell! The other couple we were with had no idea about the proposal, but ended up capturing a photo and video of the moment after realizing what was taking place. Afterward, we all popped champagne and headed to a beautiful beach to cliff dive and celebrate.
Throughout our relationship, travel has been such an integral part of our lives. We live in LA, met in New York, made it official in Chicago, fell in love in Thailand and were engaged in Spain. After looking at countless venues across California (and almost signing several contracts), we decided to instead go with our gut to have a destination wedding in Mexico which would fit perfectly with our love for travel. We wanted a beautiful location that felt timeless and didn’t need décor to overshadow the venue itself. Cue Acre Baja in San Jose del Cabo – a lush sanctuary, complete with treehouses and an award-winning farm-to-table restaurant. Our wedding planners, Bliss Events, came highly rated and had a close relationship with Acre and countless vendors which made everything so seamless. Bonnie and the team were kind, attentive and professional and helped us source whatever we needed, even offering items from their own warehouses to keep costs down for us.
The planning process was unique as I wanted to be a bit more hands off in an effort to not set too high expectations. At the time, I had a demanding job so things didn’t come together until the last 1-2 months. There were certain elements that we wanted to be surprised by and although we sent thorough mood-boards of tablescapes, florals, etc., we trusted in Bliss Events to execute and put a personal twist on our vision. At the time, it wasn’t easy to convince some of our family and friends to travel to Mexico, given it had received negative attention in the news during that time, so our goal was to make sure that everyone felt comfortable with an unforgettable experience. Fast forward a few months and many of our guests will be returning with us to Mexico this year to relive what they say was one of the best weekends of their lives.
Everything! Our venue had a puppy adoption center on site for our guests to play with puppies in between dancing. We had a donkey and peacocks roaming the property which made it feel like we were in our own oasis. While taking photos during the reception, we ran into a mezcal tasting event that Acre was hosting for a small party. The party ended up offering us shots to celebrate the occasion which was a perfect way to kick off the reception. It may or may not have also influenced the groom and wedding guests to jump into the pool at the end of the night!
