An intimate House on the Hill wedding

Whether she admits it or not, every bride (AND groom, for that matter!), has an idea of what a dream wedding looks like. For Devon and JonEric, they dreamed of a small and intimate House on the Hill wedding with as much DIY (do-it-yourself) as possible. With the help of their friends and family, they were able to pull it off. With hand-painted decor, lights strung outside the venue, and floral arrangements crafted from a friend – everything turned out just as they had dreamed.

The perfect Austin, Texas wedding venue: House on the Hill

Perched high on a hill with a stunning view, House on the Hill was the perfect venue for the wedding of their dreams. A small ceremony, a romantic dinner for two, a charcuterie spread, corn hole, and an outdoor dance surrounded by family and friends, this wedding was an absolute dream to shoot. As if that wasn’t enough, the delectable array of cupcakes and treats from Nothing Bundt Cakes was the cherry on top of a perfect day!

Wedding planning advice for a DIY wedding

When asked for any wedding planning advice, Devon said that their 18-month long engagement gave them plenty of time to collect liquor and wine bottles for their DIY centerpieces. The couple also told friends and family to collect bottles, which brought down the cost of the wedding. You’ll see these centerpieces in the photos, but I can honestly say that I have never seen so many incredibly crafted DIY decor pieces at a wedding. From letter boards, photo frames, chalkboards, party favors, and floral vases – this wedding was a do-it-yourself inspiration and I had such a blast being a part of their special day!

Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette?

Our wedding was quite small and intimate, just as we wanted it to be! We rented the House on the Hill for the full weekend so we could have our closest friends and family stay with us, and also do as much DIY as possible. With the help of our family were able to pull off the wedding of our dreams. We hand painted all of the decor and centerpieces in different shades of copper and gray to match our rustic industrial theme. We also hung all of the lights in the outdoor space ourselves to make it feel more intimate, and my sister-in-law Stephanie did all of the flower arrangements herself (and at 8 months pregnant) and everything turned out beautifully.

What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

My favorite part of the day was the first look, because it was truly an intimate moment we were able to have just the two of us. I loved the dancing and the band as well, and getting to celebrate with those closest to us.

Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?

We had been engaged for about a year and a half, which gave us plenty of time to collect liquor and wine bottles for our DIY center pieces. We also told close family and friends what we were doing for decor so they were able to help us collect free bottles, which greatly brought down the cost of our wedding.
