From the Photographer

After a year of planning a destination wedding that could no longer happen because of Covid, Kortnee and Karras decided to elope in a small intimate backyard wedding with only their parents; everyone else joined them through Zoom.

Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette?

Our wedding day was so magical. Initially, we had plans to elope in Miami with about 30 of our closest family and friends. When COVID hit, our plans drastically changed for the better in my eyes. We were able to have an intimate elopement that focused on details I never thought I would pay attention too. For my style, I really wanted to do something different and chic. I didn’t want a cookie cutter look or colors. I wanted to pick a style for my wedding that truly spoke to my love for neutral, romantic colors and my team truly made that happen for me. We decided to have just our parents present and all of our other guests present via Zoom. We had so many people telling us they felt the love through the screen and even had people telling us they teared up during intimate moments of our wedding. Hearing that just made it feel so much more special. For our ceremony, it was really important for my family and I to incorporate the Jumping the Broom tradition, where back in the 1800’s, African American men and women jumped the broom to officially claim themselves as married. As a proud African American couple, we wanted to embrace our ancestors and pay homage to this tradition. Our family members decorated our broom beautifully and now we are keeping it as an intimate keepsake. What made this truly special was our officiant incorporated the historic importance and significance of this cultural tradition to us and our community in her reading. She went above and beyond to educate herself and our guests and for that, we are forever grateful.

Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception?

I absolutely loved my decor! I cannot take credit for any of the decor pictured because my coordinator Yami provided everything shown. She truly made our location such a magical space. We all felt like we stepped into a different world. Our location had so many beautiful elements that made it so picturesque but the decor just amped it up. I trusted my coordinator to pick items that went with a romantic, boho feel and it truly felt like that.

What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?

Florals played a very important part of my wedding. I personally sought out my florist Caitlin because of the impeccable work she does and the attention to detail she has. I knew that florals was something that I wanted perfect and she delivered. I showed her some of my favorite Pinterest inspirations and I literally told her to do what feels right. She came up with the perfect idea of using dried florals along with fresh florals to really give our wedding a different feel and it came out so beautiful. My bridal bouquet was everything and more. I still get compliments on how gorgeous it looked. The best part of my bouquet is actually having it dried and preserved here in my home, which gives me the chance to reminisce about this magical day.

Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?

One of the things we personalized was a wedding playlist full of our favorite new and old jams. I was able to handpick all the songs which made it so special. My parents loved that I picked oldies that brought them back to the past and my guests loved that we had new songs that really showcased me and my husband’s love for one another. Some of my favorite parts of my wedding was seeing my husband dance with his parents. Since they live on the other side of the country, it was a special moment for us all. Another favorite part of my wedding day was getting dressed with all of my sisters and my mom. They truly went above and beyond for me that entire weekend and the day of my wedding, I truly felt spoiled. I loved every minute of being with them and just enjoying the moment.

Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.

I really wanted to feel beautiful on my wedding day while also showing off my best features. I wanted to make sure I picked a dress that showed off my curves yet still comfortable to be in. My dress literally fit like a glove. I knew that I wanted a mermaid style dress with straps and an open back. I literally was so sad when I had to take my dress off so now I’m trying to figure out how I can wear it again! I felt sexy, romantic, and the best part is my husband loved it. I think my favorite part of my look was my makeup. My MUA made me feel so beautiful and it truly shows in my pictures. I wanted to go for a glam look with a nude lip and she delivered. For hair, I knew I wanted that classic bridal look. I ended up doing my own hair and added the beautiful hair piece very last minute, which truly pulled the look together.

For my husband, we decided to do something different. We initially were going to do a gray suit but my husband decided to go for this beautiful, stone color that truly made an impact to the look of our wedding! Coupled with his personalized initial pin, I think his look really completed everything. He still gets complimented to this day and the best part is, his suit was very affordable and great quality.

How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.

My husband and I met on Tinder! We started out as friends first and slowly turned into something more intimate. Our first date was going out for sushi, my least favorite food, and going to his place and watching Planet Earth on Netflix! We truly turned into best friends and the closer we got, the more we fell in love. Our favorite thing to do and ritual every year is attending the county fair and pigging out on food. He took me there, surprised me with my best friend being present, and asked me to marry him in front of everyone. I was literally the only person in my family that didn’t know so he was able to plan this behind my back. It was such a beautiful memory and I love going back to the fair to reminisce.

What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

Our vows. I truly felt like I saw a different side of my husband while hearing his vows to me. It was such a beautiful feeling hearing from him how I much I mean to him and how much impact I’ve had on his life. It just made me feel so much more loved and it really started a deeper connection between us that we now have as husband and wife.

Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?

This may sound so cliche but do what truly makes you and your fiancé happy. No one else knows your vision so make sure to express what you want effectively. I also HIGHLY recommend investing in a wedding coordinator. I can’t tell you how stress free I was the day of my wedding because of her. I promise you won’t regret it. Lastly, take the day in. Take a few moments to yourself along with your husband and really soak in the moment. Your wedding day really does go by in a blink of an eye so take that intimate time for yourself and your new husband.
