How We Met

Lam and I first met back in the summer of 2003 while attending the Summer Bridge program at Sac State. We haven’t spoken for many years until one summer night, we ran into each other at Azukar lounge. It was a popular nightclub for most people from South Sacramento years ago. I was dancing the night away while he was “chilling’ with his friends but he would randomly appear and had a few drinks with me. Finally, he built up the courage and asked for my number. Of course, I would not give in without a good fight.

We decided to play a simple drinking game of Ro-Sham-Bo and in a lucky draw, I was defeated momentarily. He was able to redeem his reward and got my real number (gasp!) We were complete opposite: I was extroverted, he was introverted. I love to spend, he loves to save. But over time, I began to see how amazing Lam was and began to cherish our conversation and time together. The rest as they say is history.

We were cerebrating our 6 years dating anniversary at Alexander’s Steakhouse in San Jose. On our way home from an amazing dining experience, Lam suddenly pulled out a blindfold and said, “I got a surprise for you! You should put this on.” My heart was racing with full of excitement. I couldn’t stop smiling and giggling with him. 10 minutes had passed by and the car continued to accelerate at the same speed. I thought any minute now, I would be able to claim my prize. 30 minutes had gone by now and, there was still no sign of his car stopping. I’d been blindfolded in total pinch black for an hour when I realized the car had finally stopped. My nerves were starting to build up.

I heard music and voices from a distance. Once the blindfold was removed, each person started to hand me a beautiful long-stemmed red roses as I made my way up to the staircase outlined by votive candles. It was indeed a very thoughtful and romantic ambiance. It took a few minutes for my eyes to adjust to the lightings but I soon realized they are my close friends and family. I was at awes!

I saw my best friend kneeling down on one knee with a rose hanging between his lips. He was holding the most beautiful ring I have ever seen in my life. I couldn’t wait to embrace him and showed him my love and gratitude for amazing job well done.
