Magical Botanical Garden Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Wedding

When you’re in the wedding business, you see countless wedding venues – hotels, backyards, gardens, vineyards, etc. But there are some venues that whisk you away and make you feel like you’re in another land. Mary and David chose to have a Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center wedding, which is where we also shot their engagement photos and it felt like we were transported to a secret garden. It. Was. Stunning. Adorned with trees, stone buildings, and a lit courtyard with a fountain, this botanical garden was absolutely magical. The bride’s Vivienne Atelier lace dress with leaf details was the perfect choice for a romantic garden-themed wedding and the flower arrangements and bouquets added to the whimsical feel of the day.

A Special First-Look Together Before the Ceremony

The couple highlighted how special the first look was for them, which I hear a lot as a wedding photographer. After a full and busy morning of getting ready, “It was amazing to finally see each other for the first look… it allowed us to have a special moment together before the ceremony and turned our nerves into excitement, allowing us to feel like we were taking on the ceremony together and moving into our marriage side-by-side, as a team.” The night ended with an “epic dance party.” The live band, The Matt Wilson Band, brought so much energy and everyone had an absolute blast, wishing the night could go on forever.

A Day Centered On What Matters Most

When asked what advice they would give to a newly engaged couple planning a wedding the couple responded, “We would highly recommend that you organize [your] day to highlight the things that mean the most to you… While everyone will remind you that this day is about you, sometimes it’s easy to miss that the FLOW of the day is also for you, so make it what you want it to be!” The couple rearranged different parts of the evening to maximize their time on the dance floor because celebrating with friends and family was important to them. All in all, this Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center wedding was a magical night to remember!

Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette?

When picking a venue we knew we wanted to get married outside and dine alfresco in a garden style setting. We found this in the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, TX which is a beautiful botanical garden with stone buildings and a lit courtyard with a fountain. The venue also offered multiple sites for us to take photos and provided the opportunity to have our cocktail hour in a different setting then our ceremony and dinner so guests could explore the beautiful grounds of the garden. Also important to us was the built-in back up plan which was a large building adjacent to the courtyard with floor to ceiling windows that would have provided a great alternative ceremony site, we utilized this space for our dance floor! In keeping with the romantic garden theme, the bride wore a lace dress with leaf details and the groom’s tie featured flowers. The flower arrangements and bouquets were made with a large amount of greenery mixed in, with sage for the grooms’ boutonniere as this is his favorite smell! We also had a small mini-theme of travel as we are avid travelers. We incorporated this in our favors which were place-setting luggage tags for our guests and table signs which were designated by countries to which we had traveled. The tables were topped with simple flower arrangements and tapered candles while the bridal party table was a long vineyard-style table with a eucalyptus runner and tapered candles throughout. The romantic garden style was also carried in the arbor which was built by the groom and featured a whimsical blush draping and large flower arrangements.

What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

The first look, speeches, and the dance floor were our favorite parts of the day. After all the build-up that occurred in the morning, it was amazing to finally see each other for the first look. That felt like the real beginning of the day of celebration and allowed us to have a special moment together before the ceremony. It turned our nerves into excitement and really allowed us to feel like we were taking on the ceremony together and moving into our marriage side-by-side as a team. Our bridal party gave amazing speeches, beginning with funny and heartfelt speeches from the dual men-of-honors followed by a flash-mob type musical song by the maid-of- honors, featuring solos members of the family & bridal party. We cried and laughed and it was such a genuine and personalized showcase of love for us, we will never forget it. Finally, we ended the night with an epic dance party. Our live band, The Matt Wilson band, brought so much energy with one of the lead singers getting on the dance floor to pump up our guests. We had an absolute blast and wanted the night to go on forever!

Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?

We would highly recommend that you organize this day to highlight those things that mean most to you. We did not partake in some of the traditional parts of weddings and we rearranged different parts of the evening to maximize our time on the dance floor as we wanted to enjoy a celebration with friends and family. While everyone will remind you that this day is about you, sometimes it is missed that the flow of the day is also for you and your spouse so make it what you want it to be!
