(Sweet) Shelby & (Hugger) Kyle met their senior year at Purdue University. Shelby worked as the athletic trainer for the Women’s Volleyball team and Kyle played as a practice player. Kyle would fake injuries in order to talk to Shelby and get her attention. Shelby would stay professional and was clueless that Kyle was interested in her. Two months later, Shelby saw Kyle out at a bar, and he had Arby’s sandwiches. Kyle offered Shelby a sandwich and they have been together ever since.

Kyle proposed on New Years Eve at 9:00PM (12/31/17) in The Villages, FL. They were out dancing in the town square with Shelby’s parents. When the band wrapped up, Kyle got down on one knee and proposed. The band saw the commotion and pulled back out their instruments. They called them both on stage and played Buddy Holly’s “True Love Ways” as they danced. Shelby loves Kyle fun-loving personality and the fact that he can always make her laugh. He has taught her to not take life so seriously and to enjoy the little things in life. She loves his ambition and how he always goes above and beyond expectations. Kyle will always go out of his way to try and make someones day.

Kyle loves that Shelby is such a kind, loving, generous, athletic, and sweet person. What’s not to love! She is always there to put a big smile on his face, and always knows how to pick him up. She’s extremely supportive in his my crazy ideas, and he knows she will always be by my side. They both enjoy hiking, traveling, wine-tasting, and cheering on the Purdue Boilermakers. Uncle Toby officiated their wedding, and cousin Jeff played the guitar as they walked down the aisle. We could not has dreamed of a more perfect wedding day for Shelby & Kyle. Every moment was gracious and oh so sweet. The ultimate goal was a beautiful destination wedding to celebrate their love with close friends and family ending with one big party. Success!

Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette?

We love adventure and to have a good time, what better way to combine those two things with a destination wedding? Our hashtag was #SchwedesinParadise, because for us, paradise is all of our closest family and friends in one location having a great time. We are happy to say that is exactly what our wedding was. We went with a slightly nautical, beach chic vibe. Navy was the main focus of our color palette with coral and gold accents. These seemed to pop with our venue at the Hyatt Regency with their signature coral colored building which really completed our vision. We had Kyle’s uncle officiate our wedding which was very special to us. He is one of our favorite people in the world, and we couldn’t think of a better man for the job. It will be something we remember for the rest of our lives.

Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception?

Our philosophy was KEEP IT SIMPLE. The last thing we wanted was to travel all the way to Florida just to stress out about color palettes or certain decor that most guests would not even notice. We kept a simple, yet classy tropical beach theme utilizing palm greenery, gold accents, and rose petals. We also loved our invitations and programs. Kyle’s brother and sister-in-law are extremely creative and designed our wedding suite and programs which turned out incredible.

What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?

I think the floral arrangements were the number one component to our overall style. The bridal bouquet was made of palm greenery, spray roses to add coral splashes, baby’s breath, and Shelby’s favorite flower calla lillies. Bridesmaids carried palm greenery and baby’s breath to accent the brides bouquet which definitely followed the simple, yet classy theme. Alter flowers incorporated all components of the floral arrangements with some navy splashed of color to tie everything together. All bouquets and arrangements from the ceremony were utilized later and the reception. Not only did this help with the continuity of the event design, it was a huge money saver as well as less stress!

Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?

One of our favorite weddings that we ever attended provided props for the guests to use on the dance far. We absolutely LOVED that idea and decided to do the same at our wedding. Keeping the nautical-ish/tropical theme we provided captains hats, variety of funky sunglasses, animal masks (fish, parrot, eagle, shark), boas, and leis. This kept people on the dance floor all night having a great time!

Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.

Again, KEEP IT SIMPLE. We are not people to go over the top for anything in our lives. ATTENTION FUTURE BRIDES: you absolutely have to check out Lulu’s bridal section online. The dresses are SO affordable and to die for. I almost decided to have a ceremony and reception dress because I loved two so much AND I would be able to afford it and still come in under budget. Sure, you can go spend thousands on a dress if you have that dream in your head… but I highly suggest checking Lulu’s out. For the bridal party, we wanted to keep the simple, yet classy theme. Both AZAZIE and The Black Tux were so easy to work with and their customer service was great. The navy, chiffon bridesmaid dresses were perfect for the humid climate as they were lightweight, and the color contrasted perfectly with the heather grey suits of the groomsmen. We kept the groomsmen without ties to give the event a more beachy vibe.

How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.

We met our senior year at Purdue University (GO BOILERS). Shelby was the senior athletic trainer for the Women’s Volleyball team, and Kyle was a practice player for the team. Kyle pursued Shelby for months, but she ignored him and was not interested in dating. Months after meeting, Shelby was waiting in line to get into a bar and saw Kyle walking by and called him into line. Kyle was thrilled to finally have her attention. Little did he know, the reason she called him over was because he was holding an Arby’s bag and she was starving. Kyle shared his sandwich Shelby and won her over that night. We will forever be thankful to Arby’s and joke that it is quite literally the reason we are married. After college we did long distance for quite a while. Shelby was finishing up her doctorate in Chicago while Kyle lived in both California and the United Kingdom over the next three years. We stayed together, went on adventures to visit each other, and continued to build our careers. After Shelby graduated, they finally moved in together and were able to settle in to their relationship more seriously. Kyle proposed on December 31, 2017 in The Villages, FL. We went to the town square dancing with Shelby’s parents, and when the band ended for the night Kyle got down on one knee in the middle of the square and proposed. Looking back on it, we don’t even think Shelby responded, she just fell on the ground. The band saw the commotion and pulled us up on stage to sing us a song and dance in front of the crowd. It felt like a fairy tale.

What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

It is hard for us to pick just one thing. Really, when we think about it, the most special part of our wedding is looking at all the family and friends that took the time to travel all the way to Florida to celebrate our love with us. It was an entire weekend to remember and we are so thankful for everyone we have in our lives.

Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?

Absolutely. Don’t sweat the small stuff. No guest knows what everything is SUPPOSE to look like, so if something goes wrong, just roll with it. All that matters is that you have each other and you are GETTING MARRIED. How cool is that?!One of the best parts of our planning process was making the decision to pick a venue and vendor team that were absolute ROCKSTARS. For having to plan a wedding from thousands of miles away, we had very minimal worries. We showed up to the venue the Thursday before the wedding, dropped off items to our coordinator, Roseli, and that was IT. We were able to spend the rest of the weekend enjoying the beautiful beach, spending time with friends and family, and cocktail. It was THE BEST WEEKEND EVER.
